TELOS

DOCUMENT PURPOSE

This document captures the TELOS method of articulating a person's personal context so that they, and AI, can better understand them and help them improve. Pay attention to the items and the concepts here, and especially on how they work together.

The conceptual path is Problems -> Mission -> (Narratives) -> Goals -> Challenges -> Strategies —> Projects -> Journal. This means that any project you're doing can be mapped all the way back up to the problem(s) you're trying to solve. This gives you transparency and explainability in everything you're doing so you don't end up busy for days/months/years without being able to remember why you're doing what you're doing.

Other sections that aren't those core sections are additional context to support them.

HISTORY

  • I grew up in the Austin, TX area
  • I went to Mission High School, where I was bullied a decent amount
  • High school is where I met my 2 life-long friends, Doug and Mitchell who are still my friends today

PROBLEMS

  • P1: Not enough people understand how to build secure open-source software

MISSION

  • M1: Create and promote a standard for building secure open-source software

NARRATIVES

  • N1: I think open-sources software is the future, and it's currently extremely insecure, so I'm building a standard and platform for people to create secure versions of whatever they build
  • N2: I am the author of a platform that helps people create secure software.

GOALS

  • G1: Go on the Secure Code Warrior podcast by July of 2026
  • G2: Get at least 100,000 downloads of SecureOSS by December of 2026
  • G3: Wife by 35
  • G4: First kid by 36

CHALLENGES

  • C1: I'm super stressed at work and never have time to work on SOSS.
  • C2: I'm having trouble building the UI/UX for SOSS
  • C3: Someone else has a similar project and it's distracting me and demotivating me
  • C4: Hate dating apps

THINGS I'VE BEEN WRONG ABOUT

  • Thought AirBnB would shut down all the hotels. But they're doing fine.
  • I thought NVIDIA would have been crushed by Amazon by like 2021

IDEAS

  • I1: Go is the best language because of how universal and fast it is
  • I2: All government software should be OSS and run off SOSS
  • I3: Adam Smith's invisible hand doesn't apply to FOSS because incentives are misaligned

PREDICTIONS

  • NVIDIA hits $200 by August of 2026 (80%)
  • China attacks Taiwan by January of 2027 (60%)
  • The price of a gallon of milk hits ______ by ______________. (75%)

WISDOM

  • The magic you're looking for is in the work you're avoiding.
  • In practice, weak people behave very similarly to evil people. Don’t tie yourself to either.
  • When I am feeling low mood or low energy, 95% of the time it's because I have not 1) gotten up early, 2) gotten outside, 3) worked out, 4) gone for a walk, or done anything else physical in the last 2 days. Just go do that, and you'll instantly feel better.

TRAUMAS

  • Lost my Mom at an early age due to a traffic accident when I was in the car
  • A major house fire killed our family dog when I was 6

LOG (Journal)

  • 22/11/2019: Not sure why she reacted like that. Wasn't my fault. But we fixed it with pecan pie.
  • 22/01/2020: Got my first investor lined up!
  • 12/03/2020: Seem to have sprained my ankle or something. Keep limping on that side.
