I think this is a duplicate of #164

TL;DR: many systems, including Mailman (which is what mailing list users use, which is how the linked post was posted) interact poorly with systems which want to show a threaded view, because they destructively mangle messages passing through them. Given the presence of sufficient information, we are sometimes able to reconstruct the correct threading structure, but we can't do it in all circumstances.
