Linking and Tagging Emotions

in Your Second Brain

"Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes."

Carl Jung

Acknowledging and integrating emotions in a tool like TheBrain can greatly enhance the value and effectiveness of your personal knowledge management system. While thoughts and emotions are distinct, they are deeply intertwined in human cognition and can significantly impact how we process and remember information. By capturing and visualizing these emotions, your Second Brain evolves beyond a repository of projects and data to a dynamic map of your cognitive and emotional landscape, providing deeper insights and an enriched understanding of your life.

Here are some detailed ways to incorporate this concept:

Emotional Tagging… Yes, you can, and should.

With thought types and tags in TheBrain you can add a level of classification that has no limits. Thought tags and types work great as secondary attributes on a topic, like how things make you feel. Create emotion tags like joy, inspiration, love, nostalgia, etc. This method can help in recalling information more vividly and can make the process of reviewing notes a more personal and emotionally engaging experience.

Capturing Life's High Points, because you will forget.

And this leads me to the more general effort of capturing life’s high points. I encourage all users to document not just academic or professional information but personal milestones, happy moments, and significant life events. These can be tagged as 'joyful moments', 'milestones', 'love', or 'personal achievements'. By doing this, your knowledge base becomes a repository with personal history and emotional journey. One of TheBrain’s power users Omer Aziz has a very cool thought type in his Brain called “strong moments”. It was something he demoed in one of his webinars several years back and I absolutely loved it because you don’t often think of these special ah ha moments when you peak, so capturing them in your Brain can bring huge personal insights.

Omer Aziz's "strong moments" thought types help him track his peak performance.

Anecdotal Notes, the Juicy Stuff.

Include personal anecdotes related to the information topics. For instance, if you are researching a topic you are passionate about, include a note on why this matters to you personally, how you first became interested, or a memorable experience related to it. Now you may be thinking I already know the answers to this why bother here? Well, like any good journal or picture album these clear luminous events tend to fade with time. Having a digital memory of this stuff becomes a treasure as the years go by.

People-Focused Thoughts and Notes

Create a section in your Brain for people who matter. Include notes about family members, friends, mentors, anyone significant in your life. These notes should capture not just names and contact information but also cool memories, why they are important, and what you have learned from them.

Passion Projects, Always

Your Second Brain is really for everything. Work-related projects and thoughts are critical but don’t forget to add your passion projects. This includes hobbies, volunteer work, or any personal projects. Detailing the journey, challenges, and what one loves about these projects can make the knowledge base more holistic and personally meaningful.

Mood-Focused Reflection

In addition to thought types and tags you can create sections in your Brain that focus on emotional or mood-based content. This gives you the freedom to brainstorm and go deep on an emotive subject. Add areas for your inspirations, motivations, as well as a reflections section. Your notes can have inspiration quotes, images, and more in-depth diary entries.

Jerry Michalski’s Brain contains over 569,373 thoughts and 1,089,688 links. His "Words I love" area offers inspirational words he collects.

Visual Emotional Cues and Aesthetics

You can dramatically alter the mood of your Brain by curating thought type colors and wallpaper. Use visual cues like colors, icons, or images to represent different emotions. For example, red for things you’re passionate about, light blue for calm, reflective thoughts, or yellow for joyful ideas. TheBrain's zoomable icons can be used to instantly mouse over images of events or inspirational photos to get you in the right mood.

In addition to your overall Brain's default wallpaper setting, you can utilize TheBrain’s dynamic wallpaper feature. This enables you to change your background when you click on different thought types. For instance, a "completed projects" thought type can launch an image of a horizon to support the mood of progression. These subtle cues make your knowledge base visually appealing but also emotionally intuitive.

TheBrain’s dynamic wallpaper can by specified for each thought type to reinforce mood or tone of content.

Reflective Prompts to Get Started

Adding affective based tags opens the flood gates for new self-knowledge but sometimes if you have an existing Brain focused mostly on work projects or research you may wonder how to get started. You can start by revisiting past notes and key sections in your Brain with a focus on emotional growth and understanding. Ask yourself questions like “How did this event make me feel?” or “Why is this memory important to me?” Or as mentioned above you may prefer to create a fresh new area to brainstorm in.

By incorporating these elements, your knowledge base becomes a rich tapestry of your life’s passions, emotions, and experiences, making it a truly invaluable personal asset. It transforms into a dynamic reflection of both your cognitive processes and emotional experiences. This enriched approach not only deepens your insights but also creates a more engaging, immersive experience, making your Second Brain a true mirror of your inner self.

Introducing TheBrain API

TheBrain API has arrived! Jump in!

TheBrain can now be controlled by a full-featured REST API. Designed for experienced programmers, the API opens up a world of possibilities. Access to a rich set of functions for querying, creating and modifying all types of data is included. Create thoughts automatically in response to events in the real world. Automate processes for moving thoughts through a workflow. Implement custom import/export logic. Control your brain from your watch or with your voice. These are just a few of the applications that are now open to pursue. Get started now at https://api.bra.in.

The available endpoints provide a wide array of capabilities for data access such as: getting thoughts, links, attachments, and notes, performing searches, and exploring the network of connections. Write access is also supported so you can programmatically create, modify, and delete thoughts, notes, links, attachments, and more.

This is a first release, and we look forward to incorporating your feedback as the API evolves.

To assist you in getting started, we have developed a selection of example projects in several widely-used frameworks that showcase the process of making API calls within your program. The Blazor app contains the most example calls. The Python and Node apps demonstrate the overall structure and creating a thought.

Retiring WebBrain and TheBrain 8

TheBrain 8 is no longer supported and WebBrain.com will be permanently shut down on September 15, 2023.

TheBrain 9 was introduced to the public on December 18, 2015. This new, revolutionary software required more advanced server technology for syncing and thus App.TheBrain.com was launched as well.

Technology evolves. It’s now time to say goodbye to v8 and WebBrain.com. If you’re still running TheBrain 8 (or an earlier version) and syncing to WebBrain.com, now is the time to upgrade to TheBrain 13. WebBrain will be permanently shut down on September 15, 2023. Please review the following steps for your data migration. As always, if you have any questions along the way, feel free to contact us at [email protected].

If you are not running a version of TheBrain earlier than v9 and have no earlier brains synced to WebBrain - this scenario does not affect you and no further action is required.

To complete the data migration, first, verify you are running TheBrain 8.0.2.2. Brain databases must first run in v8.0.2.2 in order for them to be compatible in a v13 import. If you are not running this version, contact [email protected] to receive a download link.

Option 1:

Launch TheBrain 8.0.2.2 and open the desired brain you wish to migrate

Click on File > Create BrainZip

Download and install TheBrain 13 from www.thebrain.com/download.

Launch v13 and click on File > Import > TheBrain 8 Brain (.brainzip)

Option 2:

Log into your account at https://webbrain.com/login.

You'll see a drop down arrow next to each brain you have synced. Click this arrow and download a .brainzip for each brain you wish to migrate to v13

Locate the downloaded .brainzip files and double click. This will launch v8.0.2.2.

Continue with the steps outlined in Option 1.

Once completed and migrated to v13, you'll be running the latest greatest technology from TheBrain and able to sync to App.TheBrain.com which is faster, more reliable and includes features and improvements beyond anything that ever existed in WebBrain. Welcome to the future!

Tech analyst Jerry Michalski and TheBrain’s inventor, Harlan Hugh discuss Jerry's digital brain, TheBrain's history, artificial intelligence and more.

These two friends and visionaries discuss and celebrate 25 years of innovation and digital thought. From the first meeting in 1997 when TheBrain was first unveiled all the way into the AI-filled future, this lively discussion has it all. Highlights include Jerry's outline of the process he uses to add to his brain, and his best practices for linking thoughts. They also share anecdotes and fun facts about how Jerry's usage helped to push the technology forward. And of course the factors driving the next-generation of tools for thought play a major role in shaping the conversation.

Whether you intend to open a new business, get a promotion, or just lose ten pounds, you need to know how you are going to get there. A goal without proper planning and reviewing is just an idea.

Here are five simple steps that you can take in TheBrain to help you actually achieve whatever it is you're setting out to do.

Collect

Focus on quantity rather than quality. No idea is too big or too small in this phase. Bring any data that you might think is relevant to your eventual success. Web pages, documents, notes and thoughts. Get them all into your digital brain to reflect upon later.

Refine

Time to clean up. Create some intervening thoughts and group together similar topics for easy access in the future. Delete anything that may be completely unrealistic. Add additional content when something sparks a new idea.

Schedule

Now that you've educated yourself in some of the steps you'll be taking to achieve your goal, set up some checklist for important milestones you want to attain along the way. Use TheBrain reminders for reliable assistance. Format your schedules within structured tables within your notes. By taking these steps, you'll be holding yourself accountable for making progress along the way.

Review

Create a thought for journaling. Getting ideas and thoughts out of your head and into your digital brain will allow you to reflect on your success and learn from missteps along the way.

Adjust

No one has a crystal ball. You may have been too ambitious at the beginning of your journey. Maybe you were too reserved. With all of the documented progress you've kept in TheBrain, there's always an opportunity to make adjustments to your schedule and processes to insure that the final result is a good one.

Start documenting the process of achieving your new year's resolution in your existing brain, or use one of the templates below for an inspirational push.
