Enter a password to unlock the disk "Nix Store".

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro M2 to MacOS 14.6.1 (from a prior 14.x.x version). When I logged back in, a dialog pops up that says,

Entera a password to unlock the disk "Nix Store".
Password: [**********************]
[] Remember this password in my keychain

However, my user/admin password doesn't work, and I can't recall what other password I might have used here. I don't recall this happening on previous updates.

I've had nix installed on this laptop for over a year, via the Determinate installer. Any suggestions what to do?

After too many failed password attempts, disk is now locked. I guess delete and reinstall (and record my password this time) is the only option.

Sorry I missed this -- I was under the weather last week.

It's very strange that you were prompted for this in the first place. We create a random password ourselves (which is why you won't know what it is), but it gets saved in the keychain, so you should never be prompted for it...

Once you finish uninstalling, I might suggest using the .pkg: https://docs.determinate.systems/getting-started/individuals#install

Same issue here, when i entry my login password it says the password is wrong

I also see the same prompt sometimes after I reboot my system. In practice, I can just ignore it, because the Nix Store gets mounted anyway without me having to provide the password. But the prompt is annoying anyway.

I get the prompt sometimes and the keychain password works but not this time. I tried to ignore it but my Nix Store isn't mounted. I'm going to reinstall.

The next time someone runs into this, I have a couple things that can you can try that would help me debug why this seems to happen randomly:

• Look at the contents of /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.nixos.darwin-store.plist (if using upstream Nix) or /Library/LaunchDaemons/systems.determinate.nix-store.plist (if using Determinate Nix) and run the command in the ProgramArguments array manually and post the output, if any, here. Include which terminal app you used when you ran this (Terminal.app, iTerm2, Ghostty, etc).
• Open "Keychain Access.app" and in the "System" keychain, look for an entry like "disk# encryption password" -- see if providing that to the password prompt works

Hi, just ran into this issue. Manually entering the password from Keychain worked for me.

I tried the Keychain Access solution first (which worked) so when I checked /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.nixos.darwin-store.plist and ran that command it just told me the volume is already unlocked which isn't super helpful sorry 😅

For context this is the first time this has occurred to me.
It happened after restarting my Macbook Pro 16" 2019 after having to manually turn it off because it froze.
I've been having really weird kernel issues recently where my laptop is freezing and crashing.
I don't know if this could be related to whatever is going wrong with my macbook lately or entirely unrelated but maybe the context can help.

EDIT: I realized my issue was due to an unrelated automation on my system rewriting synthetic.conf - no issues w/ the nix installer.

I just did a reinstall, entering manually the password from "disk3 encryption password" with the "save in keychain" checkbox ticked, created the entry "Nix Store":

I've been getting this one on the past two systems. Getting it right now and it doesn't accept my user login.

I appreciate that @ddlsmurf posted that trick, I was getting really frustrated.
