and since when did metamask become so slow and bloated? Thing is freezing every two clicks. unreal.

can confirm that login screen does not show up, but a "busy circle" is circling around and never ending that process!
Thought that this behaviour might relate to "to much tabs" (as I sometimes with elder versions found), but also a fresh started firefox with only the home tab open, doesn't react and show the login screen at all (or after some time that firefix needs to initialize).

Can you please follow these steps to confirm more data and share a screenshot?

Follow the same steps as collecting background state logs up to the final step. Instead of opening the Console, do the following:

Open the Storage tab
In the left sidebar, select Extension storage
Click the entry for the MetaMask extension
This will be the extension’s Internal UUID (the same value shown in the DevTools address bar for the expanded view, or on the browser’s “Debug add-ons/Extensions” page under MetaMask)
In the main pane, you should see two keys: data and meta
If nothing appears, the state is likely lost
