Fixes #362
This is to be merged into a staging branch for 1.4, which will be triggered by adding the extensions mechanism in #361. I will also edit #361 to point to the staging branch. This way we can merge the staging branch into master when #361 is approved, and thus avoid having to make separate PATCH and MINOR releases.
