What is filtering mode?

I enabled "Block connections without VPN" in my settings. This causes the notification 'Turn off "Block connections without VPN" in Android VPN settings to use TrackerControl in filtering mode' to be displayed.

I checked the internet and looked through issues and discussions but couldn't find an explanation of this term in regards to the app.

So far, I haven't noticed any issue with app functionality yet, so I'm wondering: What is filtering mode, what is it used for and how do I enable/disable it?

Filtering mode is necessary for TrackerControl to run, since it allows the analysis of domains. There are rare cases when this is not required but they aren't usually applicable.
