Responding to "Just a nit: TTL in the name implies to me that the var contains a length of time, not a timestamp. Could you call it lastUpdated2 or something like that?"

Mongo's TTL index needs a BSON date, which is generated by the Date object. Just adding another field rather than modifying the lastUpdated field to preserve any other dependencies.
