Arial font requirement

[greyltc]

I get lots of unit test failures unless I have Arial installed. I think it would be great if the tests depended on a font that wasn't proprietary. Maybe LiberationSerif from https://github.com/liberationfonts/liberation-fonts?

What failures are you getting? The GitHub runners don't install any special fonts as far as I know and they run all the time.

This may take some time to unpack, but in general (at first glance) it looks to me like there are no fonts available to your test environment other than the only font we ship (relief-singleline-cad). This font is not a regular font, and the fact it is failing is not surprising because it is a specialized single line font (useful for e.g. engraving). Can you confirm what fonts are available to your test system in the case where /usr/share/fonts/TTF/Arial.TTF is NOT present?

Also, the way our font system is supposed to work is that it defaults to "Arial" but then OCCT FontMgr will default to a different font if that is not found. This behavior is admittedly not very transparent to the end user, and made worse by the fact that the font property is often inaccurate.

The question of what fonts to ship with build123d is extremely non-trivial by the way. I have spent a lot of time on this issue and some fonts are definitely better than others in terms of downstream topological stability but none that I have found are perfect (including e.g. LiberationSans).

I am currently leaning towards bundling this font with build123d https://github.com/isdat-type/Relief-SingleLine/blob/main/fonts/outline_otf/ReliefSingleLineOutline-Regular.otf which is relatively topologically stable and is a more traditional non-zero-width relative of the singleline font we already bundle.

Another decent choice is this one https://github.com/hikikomori82/osifont but I haven't tested yet for downstream topological stability

It seems like a great idea to me to ship an open source default font here and make that the default for everything (tests & runtime) rather than relying on whatever the user might have installed (just like what's apparently already being done with build123d/data/fonts/reliefsingleline/ReliefSingleLineCAD-Regular.ttf). Otherwise, the font-reliant tests here seem to become a bit of a crap-shoot. I wonder how the tests would go if only wingdings was available 😆.

Yep, I have already experienced this because the fonts on github runners ubuntu-24.04-arm are not the same as ubuntu-24.04 for instance. That was not fun to debug because I was concerned there were CPU specific x86_64 vs aarch64 issues at hand.

The other benefit of bundling a font is to help build123d-sandbox, which currently has no (regular) Text support in part because of the lack of bundled fonts.

Making the bundled font the de-facto default might be a bridge too far for me personally. I definitely support making it the default for the tests, but the font I linked above is not really the best choice for many applications because it has a very thin stroke width (this can cause functional and aesthetic issues).

I am not clear on what you are asking. As stated above, the default IS technically Arial -- but normal environments (which contain greater than zero fonts) will default to a font available there. In the meantime, I recommend you install a font into your testing environment that are accessible to build123d / OCCT. Maybe start with Liberation Sans as I have found that is a decent one overall topologically speaking.

The longer term solution is to bundle a "regular" font in build123d.
