Add Tech Ethics #3560

Naming: All Awesome lists are "resources", so that prefix is moot. |
|
Thanks for the swift response. I was keen to show that the focus is "resources people can use" rather than "examples of technology being used for ethical purposes" ("tech for good"). I've noticed these two concepts being unhelpfully conflated which is why I was keen to word it like this when I created the repo. It also differentiates it from another common use in this area which is more abstract discussion of whether a particular technology is ethical (or information about why it isn't) without any practical focus. You've given me food for thought with your comment, though 🤔 |
|
@sindresorhus I've been reflecting on your comment and have now renamed the project to remove "Resources". It's now just "Awesome Tech Ethics". I've renamed the repo, changed its heading, updated the link text & URL in this PR and updated this PR's title, so I think we should be good to go now. Thanks again. |
|
I've checked the checklist and don't see anything missing. |
|
@sindresorhus is there anything more you need before merging this? As I mentioned, I've made changes in response to your previous comment. Thanks |
|
Some descriptions, like "Tech Won't Save Us podcast" and "The Algorithmic Justice League," are lengthy. Condensing all descriptions to a single line or 2 would enhance readability imo! |
|
Thanks @yboulaamane. I've slightly shortened those descriptions now. Happy to approve? |
|
@damian-developer thanks too for your review. If you're happy, please can you explicitly approve the PR? Thanks |

This is a really cool addition, thanks @sampart .
Just two things:
- getting a lint error about:
Text "notion" should be written as "Notion" remark-lint:awesome-spell-check
I would just add an ignore for this because it's definitely spurious. The Notion app has not replaced the word "notion" in English.
- Maybe rephrase your list description as more of a noun/collection than a progressive verb - "Guides/tools/? for reducing ["mitigating and avoiding" is a bit cumbersome IMO] the potentially negative effects of technology on society" ? Just a stylistic suggestion.
Thanks for sharing.
EDIT: You MIGHT also consider adding something like "computing technology" or something (not sure if that's the best phrase) - e.g. oil rigs are a kind of technology, in a sense, but i think it's not what you mean (something more like "tech").

Thanks for the approval and feedback, @hesreallyhim!
Aw, thanks ❤️
CI seems to be passing, so hopefully this isn't a blocker to merging, therefore.
Thanks. I've replaced "mitigating and avoiding" with "reducing".
Ooh, good point. The alternatives I can think of ("information technology", "computer technology") sound a bit cumbersome or dated to my ear, but I'll bear your comment in mind and make further updates if something comes to mind. |
|
Great addition! I would maybe add The Social Dilemma to the "Media" Section as it has been quite influential and made many people—at least in my circle—aware of the negative consequences of tech in society. Would love to see this merged ❤️ |

Thanks @marcelkalveram. Thanks also for the suggestion; I've been thinking about it a lot. I think for now I'm coming down on the side of not including it - I'm keen that the emphasis of the list is on practical resources for improving the situation, as opposed to broader awareness-raising. But I will keep it in mind and might add it in future. Are you happy to approve this PR nonetheless? |
You can help by giving it a formal Review! 🫶 |

Thank you! |

Resources for mitigating and avoiding the potential negative effects of technology on society.
sindresorhus/awesomealready features awesome lists about broader approaches to computing (e.g. Permacomputing, Clean Tech), but nothing for ethical tech specifically.By submitting this pull request I confirm I've read and complied with the below requirements 🖖
Please read it multiple times. I spent a lot of time on these guidelines and most people miss a lot.
Requirements for your pull request
Don't open a Draft / WIP pull request while you work on the guidelines. A pull request should be 100% ready and should adhere to all the guidelines when you open it. Instead use #2242 for incubation visibility.
Don't waste my time. Do a good job, adhere to all the guidelines, and be responsive.
You have to review at least 2 other open pull requests.
Try to prioritize unreviewed PRs, but you can also add more comments to reviewed PRs. Go through the below list when reviewing. This requirement is meant to help make the Awesome project self-sustaining. Comment here which PRs you reviewed. You're expected to put a good effort into this and to be thorough. Look at previous PR reviews for inspiration. Just commenting “looks good” or simply marking the pull request as approved does not count! You have to actually point out mistakes or improvement suggestions. Comments pointing out lint violation are allowed, but does not count as a review.
You have read and understood the instructions for creating a list.
