The current documentation on the composite driver is incorrect. $stash was referenced a few times but is not defined, I'm guessing older documentation. Also I've found out that the $subDrivers array needs to be passed via setOptions() not via the Composite driver construct. Lastly the drivers themselves need their own specific options set before being inserted into the array.
