Learning

  • 20% to know to be 80% effective
  1. Get the big picture
  • Learn just enough to know to get the big picture.
  • Do basic research, do a internet searches, read intro chapters.
  • Goal isn't to learn topic, but just figure out how big it is
  1. Determine Scope
  • Figure out what you want to actually learn
  • Focus on a specific thing you want to learn
  • Be specific, include a reason. User use case?
  • Can always go back and learn subtopics later.
  • Make it appropriate for time focus you have
  1. Define success
  • Make a specific result you should be able to when you reach your goal
  • Gives you a target to aim at
  1. Find resources
  • More than one book. Bibliography?
  • Find experts, identify books, youtube videos, websites
  • Gather many. Don't worry about quality of resources.
  • This is brainstorming phase
  • Amazon, find the # of books. Then Google, videos, podcasts, library, Source code, blog posts, experts, example projects, online documentation.
  • This helps avoid bias
  1. Create a learning plan
  • Skim material you have, break down the topic into subsections.
  • A to B to Z. Not random. Find a path to get you where you need to go.
  • Like an outline of a book to learn subject. Like a book Table of Contents
  • See how others teach this - compare to see if lots break down content the same way.
  • Don't copy contents of a book - you may not need all of it and it may be poorly organized.
  1. Filter resources
  • Pick and choose the resources you want for the task
  • You can't use all resources, some of the data is redundant. Can't read 50 blog posts and 10 books for this

LDLT (Learn, Do, Learn, Teach) 7. Learn enough to get started (not everything)

  • Don't go too far, just the minimal amount to get started and learn
  • Skim info, don't deep read
  1. Play around!
  • Fun but scary. No rules, unbounded, etc.
  • It's totally important. Kid's approach to learning
  • It's okay to not know what you're doing
  • You'll develop plenty of questions as you play
  • Don't worry about outcomes. Create a small project. Write down questions
  1. Learn enough to do something useful
  • Curiosity
  • Learning should be fascinating, not boring
  • Try to answer your questions you have.
  • Learn about module in depth, go through resources
  • Go back and play if you need to
  • You don't have to consume all the resources. No gold sticker
  • Review success criteria in step 3.
  1. Teach

  • Avoid Self doubt -
  • Being one step ahead of student is just fine
  • It makes you organize the information
  • Teach by blog post, youtube, talk to spouse
  • This will reveal things you didn't understand, and also point out things you misunderstood.
