Android Setup Guide
Vanilla officially supports Android, but only as a frontend. This is because, when not rooted, Android doesn't provide enough low-level hardware access to achieve the necessary 802.11n PTK rotation to connect as a gamepad to the Wii U.
Even rooted, most phone-based hardware uses FullMAC wireless hardware to conserve power and CPU cycles, which prevents us from making the necessary changes from software. A rooted Android device with SoftMAC wireless hardware should theoretically work, however there currently isn't any known mainstream device like that.
As a result, most users will need their Android frontend to be accompanied by a compatible pipe. Currently, the only pipe available is a separate GNU/Linux PC on the same network, however there is work-in-progress hardware being developed that will provide plug-and-play pipe capabilities to Android.
