No intent to merge this experiment for now; I just want to prevent accidentally removing the branch.
The goal of this experiment is to check whether we could make installs faster by running the tgz->zip transform within JS rather than wasm, by directly manipulating a single byte buffer.
Last time I checked the gains were fairly low, though.
