Conceptually I like this, but this is happening in the block-editor store and calling core/editor, which doesn't quite feel right (i.e. the editor package imports from block-editor, but not the other way around).
Can we add this to the editor package directly, as a replacement for the existing locking behaviour in: packages/editor/src/utils/media-upload/index.js? That way we could conditionally skip the existing locking behaviour when the client side media processing experiment is active.
Apologies if I'm missing nuance here, and thanks for looking into a fix!

Tiny nit (feel free to ignore, it really doesn't matter), but we could have a single check in this file by moving these checks down to the onFileChange callback before calling setSaveLock and clearSaveLock, rather than have the check inside these functions.
Also, not for this PR, but when we get to #74827 (implement WebAssembly support detection and fallbacks) we'll have a need for a shouldEnableClientSideMediaProcessing function in the editor package, too. Or alternately, it could be part of media-upload as well?

I've pushed a change that seems to fix the problem for me locally. The solution was the unbundle the upload-media package (it was previously bundled back in #68522). Now that the client side media processing work is being slated for a major release, I think it's likely the right time to unbundle it. In this case, it appears to be necessary because we actually only want the package's store to be registered once, and it's used by multiple packages (editor, block-editor). So, I think this means it should only be calling that package once, instead of it being duplicated into multiple packages. I'll just ping @jorgefilipecosta and @jsnajdr for a confidence check on this, though, as they were involved in the change to bundle the package. It is published to npm now (https://www.npmjs.com/package/@wordpress/upload-media) so I believe it's okay, but want to double-check. |

@adamsilverstein it looks like you've rebased this and removed the changes I'd made to unbundle the package — I suspect the e2es will continue to fail without that change, because the What's the status with this PR and how can I best help here? |

This is re-testing well for me! I reckon this would be good to merge, then we can try rebasing #74566 after it's landed and see if it helps at all with the bundle sizes.

Update the
editorpackage to use theisUploadingstate from theupload-mediapackage when the client-side media experiment is active. This ensures that the post locking behaviour (applied when an upload is in progress) is managed via the actual uploading state in the store, rather than handled in themediaUploadfunctionHow / why
When the client side media processing experiment was active, after uploading an image to the block editor, the (published) post would become locked and stay locked.
upload-mediapackage's uploading state to determine when to lock/unlock the editorNote that this change also partially reverts #68522 which bundled the upload-media package rather than treating as an external script. While testing, e2e tests were failing due to a notice that the
upload-mediastore was being registered twice. It turns out the cause was due to the bundling as theupload-mediapackage is used by both the block-editor and editor packages.The fix there is to ensure it's unbundled (add
wpScript: trueto the package.json, define sideEffects) so that only one version of that code is called. That resolves the error.Testing instructions
