Thanks for working on this, @ingeniumed! This is better, but I can still see the same user multiple times after reloading the browser. The list eventually corrects itself. I'm guessing we display collaboratos by session, not by user. If the same user has multiple sessions, they will be displayed multiple times. Screenshot

Thanks for finding this issue, and reporting it @Mamaduka! If the same user has multiple sessions, they'll indeed show up multiple times. This is meant to identify when a user may have multiple tabs open of the same post open, for example. We also have a timeout in place before we reflect that a user has left the post. This'd be why it appears that the list eventually corrects itself. It helps in the case where for example, a user might briefly disconnect and then reconnect once more. The coloured border around their avatar would be greyed out at first, and then the avatar would be removed entirely once that timeout passes. |

Thanks for the additional context, @ingeniumed! That makes sense.
I'm not super familiar with the RTC codebase, but functionality-wise, this works as expected.
P.S. The border might not be very visible in some cases; maybe we should also grey out the avatar. But that's an issue for a different PR, we should also double-check with @WordPress/gutenberg-design team.

The method that I called within AwarenessProtocol handles that, hence why it's not needed.

Thanks for the PR; this is powerful stuff. And thanks for the ping. I think @jarekmorawski has been involved with this work, so I'll defer to him if he has context that I have not. It's a little difficult for me to test this, so I appreciate screenshots and video demos on the PR to help reviews. The main thing that stands out here is of course the awareness list itself, and I'm wondering: can we unify the visual treatment of avatars so they are the same across all collaborative features? Notes feature circular avatars with colors: 
We have an older mockup that features an awareness indicator with circles, stacked inside the blurb, like so: 
That design feels already outdated because I'm hoping we can slowly move towards a much more compact document title design by @fcoveram: 
So something that uses the existing design for that would be closer to this: 
With the above, I'm not suggesting you change away from the gray doc-title blob, or even the separate button before it at this point, I'm sharing it only as far as where some conversations have suggested things could go in the future. But for me the thing to decide is still: how do our avatars look? While square/round-rect have the benefit of inheriting radii inside a round-rect button, I'm personally drawn to the idea that the silhouette indicates the type, and circles have more or less become a de-facto standard way to indicate people. Spotify as one example uses circles for artists, round-rects for albums (mimicking the shape of a record). I'd even go a step further, if there is a future API for adding LLM/grammar agents to a document, they could show up as square, or even wavy circles, just to have their silhouette indicate non-human. It's a small little piece, but one to address. Good arguments can be made for the round-rect having brand character that evolves WordPress, but since circular avatars are already shipping in 6.9, I'd recommend the next step is to embrace those for now, and if we then choose to refresh those avatars we can do so in the future, and apply the new treatment across all. Is that fair? If yes, the metrics for avatars are these for the big ones: 32x32 outer diameter. 1.5px inner colored border, inside that another 1.5px inner white halo border. Example:

I agree that we should get the UI design in line with the other collaborative features, so they look unified. I have created an issue to tackle this here, in which I have linked your comment and tagged @jarekmorawski as well. Feel free to comment and edit anything on there as you wish. If it's okay, I'd like to tackle this in a follow up PR rather than in this PR as this is focused on fixing the bug that's currently being seen on trunk. There's more PRs incoming to add UI components to take advantage of the awareness data by @maxschmeling, in which this can be included. |

What?
Disconnected users should be removed from the default provider's awareness state.
Why?
It's important to always keep the awareness state updated. Any client that disconnects should be removed from the awareness state, and should not be left behind.
How?
The default provider wasn't correctly updating the clients that should be removed. It was only emitting a change, but not actually making a change to the awareness which is what it should be doing.
