# Code Review: VIBE-143 - User Table Creation in Database

**Reviewer:** Claude Code
**Date:** 2025-11-20
**Branch:** vibe-180-upload-reference-data (VIBE-143 implementation)

## Summary

The implementation successfully creates a User table in the database and integrates it with both SSO and CFT IDAM authentication flows. The solution includes:

- Prisma schema definition for the User model
- User repository with CRUD operations
- Integration with SSO callback
- Integration with CFT IDAM callback
- Comprehensive unit tests

The implementation follows the technical requirements and provides a solid foundation for user data management. However, there are a few areas that need attention before deployment.

---

## 🚨 CRITICAL Issues

### 1. Missing Index on `user_provenance` + `user_provenance_id` Composite
**File:** `apps/postgres/prisma/schema.prisma:31`

**Issue:** The current schema has a unique constraint only on `user_provenance_id`, but according to the ticket requirements, users should be uniquely identified by the combination of provenance + provenance_id. While a UUID should be globally unique, the business requirement states that the same user could theoretically exist across different provenances.

**Impact:** Potential data integrity issues if the same UUID is reused across different identity providers (though unlikely with proper UUIDs).

**Solution:**
```prisma
model User {
// ... existing fields ...
@@unique([userProvenance, userProvenanceId])
@@map("user")
}
```

### 2. No Validation of Role Values
**File:** `libs/auth/src/user-repository/index.ts:7`

**Issue:** The `role` field accepts string literals, but there's no runtime validation that the role is one of the allowed values (VERIFIED, LOCAL_ADMIN, CTSC_ADMIN, SYSTEM_ADMIN).

**Impact:** Invalid role values could be stored in the database, causing authorization issues.

**Solution:** Create an enum in Prisma schema or add runtime validation:
```typescript
const VALID_ROLES = ["VERIFIED", "LOCAL_ADMIN", "CTSC_ADMIN", "SYSTEM_ADMIN"] as const;
function validateRole(role: string): void {
if (!VALID_ROLES.includes(role as any)) {
throw new Error(`Invalid role: ${role}`);
}
}
```

## ⚠️ HIGH PRIORITY Issues

### 1. Graceful Failure May Hide Critical Issues
**File:** `libs/auth/src/pages/sso-callback/index.ts:38-46`

**Issue:** The implementation catches database errors and continues with authentication. While this prevents auth flow breakage, it silently fails to persist user data, which defeats the purpose of the ticket.

**Impact:** Users can authenticate but their data won't be tracked, making audit logs incomplete.

**Recommendation:**
- Log the error with proper context (user email, provenance ID)
- Consider implementing a retry mechanism
- Add monitoring/alerting for database write failures
- Document this behavior

### 2. Missing User Provenance Validation
**File:** `libs/auth/src/user-repository/index.ts:7`

**Issue:** The `userProvenance` field accepts any of 4 values but there's no runtime validation.

**Impact:** Invalid provenance values could be stored.

**Recommendation:** Add validation similar to role validation.

### 3. Name Parsing Logic is Fragile
**File:** `libs/auth/src/pages/cft-callback/index.ts:46-47`

**Issue:** Splitting `displayName` by space assumes Western naming conventions. Users with single names, multiple middle names, or non-Western naming conventions may have their names incorrectly parsed.

**Impact:** Incorrect name storage for some users.

**Recommendation:**
```typescript
// Better approach: use first word as firstName, rest as surname
const nameParts = userInfo.displayName.trim().split(/\s+/);
const firstName = nameParts[0] || undefined;
const surname = nameParts.length > 1 ? nameParts.slice(1).join(" ") : undefined;
```

Or even better, check if CFT IDAM provides separate first/last name fields in the token.

### 4. No Email Validation
**File:** `libs/auth/src/user-repository/index.ts:16`

**Issue:** The `email` field is not validated before being stored.

**Impact:** Invalid email formats could be stored in the database.

**Recommendation:** Add email validation using a library like `validator` or a regex pattern.

## 💡 SUGGESTIONS

### 1. Add Audit Logging
**File:** `libs/auth/src/user-repository/index.ts`

**Suggestion:** The ticket specification mentioned audit logging for user operations. Consider adding audit trail functionality:
- Log all user creation events
- Log all role updates
- Include timestamp, performing system, and changes made

### 2. Add Repository Method for Finding User by Email
**File:** `libs/auth/src/user-repository/index.ts`

**Suggestion:** Already implemented! Good work including `findUserByEmail()`.

### 3. Add TypeScript Enum for User Provenance
**File:** `libs/auth/src/user-repository/index.ts:7`

**Suggestion:**
```typescript
export enum UserProvenance {
SSO = "SSO",
CFT_IDAM = "CFT_IDAM",
CRIME_IDAM = "CRIME_IDAM",
B2C_IDAM = "B2C_IDAM"
}
```

This provides better type safety and IDE autocomplete.

### 4. Consider Adding Indexes for Common Queries
**File:** `apps/postgres/prisma/schema.prisma`

**Suggestion:** Add indexes for fields that will be frequently queried:
```prisma
@@index([email])
@@index([lastSignedInDate])
```

### 5. Add User Repository Integration Tests
**File:** `libs/auth/src/user-repository/index.test.ts`

**Suggestion:** Current tests use mocked Prisma. Consider adding integration tests that actually hit a test database to verify Prisma queries work correctly.

### 6. Document Database Migration Strategy
**File:** N/A

**Suggestion:** The review notes indicate migration drift issues. Document the migration strategy and ensure the team has a plan to resolve the drift before merging to main.

## ✅ Positive Feedback

1. **Excellent Test Coverage:** The user repository has comprehensive unit tests covering all edge cases including:
- Creating new users
- Updating existing users
- Handling missing optional fields
- The upsert pattern in `createOrUpdateUser()`

2. **Proper TypeScript Types:** Strong typing throughout with clear interfaces (`CreateUserInput`, `UpdateUserInput`)

3. **Following CLAUDE.md Guidelines:**
- User repository in libs/auth (correct location)
- Co-located test files
- Proper module structure
- ES modules with `.js` extensions

4. **Good Error Handling:** Proper try-catch blocks with console.error logging

5. **Prisma Best Practices:**
- Proper field mapping (`@map`, `@@map`)
- Correct data types (UUID, VARCHAR with limits, TIMESTAMP)
- Appropriate constraints (unique, primary key)
- Default values where appropriate

6. **Immutable created_date:** Correctly uses `@default(now())` to ensure `created_date` is set once and never changes

7. **Proper null handling:** `firstName`, `surname`, and `lastSignedInDate` are correctly marked as optional

8. **Business Logic Separation:** User persistence logic is properly separated from auth callback logic

9. **Upsert Pattern:** `createOrUpdateUser()` correctly implements the upsert pattern required by the ticket

10. **Last Sign In Tracking:** Implementation correctly updates `lastSignedInDate` on every login

## Test Coverage Assessment

### Unit Tests: ✅ Excellent
- **Location:** `libs/auth/src/user-repository/index.test.ts`
- **Coverage:** All repository methods tested
- **Quality:** Tests cover happy paths and edge cases
- **Mocking:** Proper mocking of Prisma client

### E2E Tests: ⚠️ Not Added
- **Status:** No new E2E tests were created
- **Recommendation:** Add E2E tests to verify user creation during actual login flows
- **Test scenarios needed:**
- New SSO user logs in → verify user record created
- Existing SSO user logs in → verify lastSignedInDate updated
- SSO user with changed role → verify role updated
- New CFT user logs in → verify user record created with firstName/surname
- Existing CFT user logs in → verify lastSignedInDate updated

### Accessibility Tests: N/A
- Not applicable for this backend-focused ticket

### Estimated Coverage: ~90%
- High coverage on business logic
- Missing integration tests with real database

## Acceptance Criteria Verification

### Main Acceptance Criterion
- [x] **A User table is created at the back end in the database**
- ✅ Schema defined in Prisma
- ✅ Table created in database
- ✅ Includes all required fields
- ✅ Supports all authentication routes (SSO, CFT_IDAM mentioned; B2C_IDAM and CRIME_IDAM supported in schema)

### Technical Acceptance Criteria

#### 1. SSO Integration
- [x] **When a user signs in and a user record does not exist based on the provenance ID, a record is created**
- ✅ Implemented in `sso-callback/index.ts:35-46`
- ✅ Uses `createOrUpdateUser()` which creates if not exists

- [x] **When a user signs in and the record does exist, check if the role matches. If it does, the user continues to sign in. If not, the role is updated**
- ✅ Implemented in `user-repository/index.ts:57-68`
- ✅ `createOrUpdateUser()` updates role when user exists

#### 2. CFT Integration
- [x] **When a user signs in and a user record does not exist based on the provenance ID, a record is created**
- ✅ Implemented in `cft-callback/index.ts:44-61`
- ✅ Uses `createOrUpdateUser()` which creates if not exists

- [x] **The role is always 'VERIFIED'**
- ✅ Hardcoded to "VERIFIED" in `cft-callback/index.ts:56`

#### 3. `last_signed_in_date` is updated for all users when they sign in
- [x] **Implementation:**
- ✅ `createUser()` sets `lastSignedInDate: new Date()` (line 22)
- ✅ `updateUser()` accepts `lastSignedInDate` parameter (line 48)
- ✅ `createOrUpdateUser()` always passes `lastSignedInDate: new Date()` (line 66)

#### 4. `created_date` is set when the user is first created
- [x] **Implementation:**
- ✅ Prisma schema has `@default(now())` (schema.prisma:33)
- ✅ Automatically set by database on INSERT

### Table Schema Verification
- [x] user_id (UUID, primary key)
- [x] email (VARCHAR(255), unique)
- [x] first_name (VARCHAR(255), optional)
